Duncan Keith Out Rest of the Season

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

It appears that the Chicago Blackhawks will be without their star defender, and two-time Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith for the remainder of the season. While the length of the suspension is still undetermined, the NHL Department of Player Safety has given Keith the option for an in-person meeting to discuss the punishment.

Per NHL.com:

Keith was offered the opportunity for an in-person hearing as required by provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for any suspension that can exceed five games.

It is highly unlikely that Keith’s suspension will be anything less than five games since he has been called in.

Keith was assessed a game misconduct penalty at 9:27 in the first period, and the already shorthanded Chicago Blackhawks were without both Keith and Brent Seabrook for the game verse the Minnesota Wild. Keith was caught retaliating against the Wild’s Charlie Coyle, and since he has had two other disciplinary suspensions in the past, it is likely that the NHL comes down hard on the future Hall of Fame defenseman. In 2013 Keith was suspended in the Western Conference Final for a retaliatory high-stick to the LA Kings Jeff Carter, and in 2012 he was suspended five games for an elbow to the Vancouver Canucks’ Daniel Sedin.

Many publications are predicting a longer suspension than the minimum five games (as required for the in-person interview), which would cost Keith playoff games as well. Plainly said, this was a stupid penalty at a stupid time which could end up costing the team playoff wins.

  1. Bs…it was reactionary..period. I’ll bet $100 he called coyle and apilogized. Much ado about nothing

    1. No, so drinking the kool aid. He’s beeb called in and will receive at minimum 5 games.

    2. Reactionary? He stared him down and swung his stick at him…. That was on purpose

  2. So I’m of the opinion that he gets 10, and the Hawks Brass appeals. The Brass show up at the hearing with the TV ratings of the Hawks in the playoffs, and Keith doesn’t miss game 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

It was stupid, selfish, and Keith lost his head. That’s all there is to it. Sure, Coyle slew-footed him and got away with it. It’s always the retaliator who gets it.

  3. It was not reactionary or on accident. His past will come back to haunt him as they factor it in to his punishment. Im guessing 7 games, and maybe more. The action was bad enough, but he drew blood and got a game misconduct for intent to injure.

  4. He has not been called in , but has been OFFERED an in person hearing, something which he can decline, as numerous other players have done. Get your facts straight, Chicago style sports.

    1. Exactly, and that means the suspension is considered to be 5+ games. Get your facts straight David Bonnema.

  5. oh good lord suck it up it’s hockey. it has been sissified to the point they can’t play the game without worrying about hurting some one. i remember back in the day when we had enforcers who would take care of business. suck it cupcakes and play on.

    1. Allan, while i agree that sometimes we weekend the sport with some of the rules, those enforcers you love are killing themselves because of the trauma they went through playing the game.

    2. Glad to see there’s idiots everywhere. He should’ve just kicked him with his skate blade and sliced open Coyle’s femoral artery, amIright? Because, you know, it’s HOCKEY.

    3. It is exactly because we dont have enforcers (Bettmans brainfart aka the instigator penalty) that we see this kind of disgusting condict.

  6. It’s mind blowing that any fan of hockey would think it’s ok to swing your stick at another players head, especially justifying it with the rationale, “Don’t be a sissy, it’s hockey”. You’re talking about a game where if you feel you or your teammates have been wronged, you can challenge the other team to a bare knuckle brawl and the only punishment is 5 minutes in the penalty box. If anyone here is a sissy, it’s Keith. If he felt so violated, he could’ve stood up and fought Coyle, but instead, he slash’s the guy in the face with enough force that bones could’ve been broken, an eye could’ve been lost, etc. Keith is a poor sport, when things don’t go the way he feels they should, he over reacts. There is no debating it, history has proven it. Don’t believe me, ask Jeff Carter, or Sedin, or now Coyle. He should get 5 games and 1 playoff game at the very minimum.

  7. R.U. Kidding hit the nail on the head and I agree with everything you said. However, I’m hoping he might miss more because I’m a Ducks fan and Chicago might play Anaheim in the first round. I remember a few years ago, Chris Pronger did something in a playoff game and missed 3ish playoff games. That’s a lot. If he is out for 2 playoff games vs a Stanley Cup contender like Ducks or Kings, that would take a huge toll on Chicago. I definitely am not crying over the suspension and I do think it’s fair, especially because he has a past and did this on purpose.
