According to Jon Heyman and verified by Jeff Passan, the Chicago Cubs have landed lefty reliever, Andrew Chafin from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Chafin isn’t a blockbuster by any means, but it continues to point to the point I made in my last post – guys are hard to come by this trade deadline.
Currently, Chafin has an 8.10 ERA in 11 games. He hasn’t given up much with regard to home runs or walks, but Arizona is a bandbox and it doesn’t help that the Diamondbacks face the offensive rich San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, and play in Colorado.
He isn’t a closer, he isn’t a high-leverage guy, but it is added depth which can help as potential double-headers hit and the Cubs find themselves needing innings. Chafin is currently on the IL with a finger injury.
While not a difference maker by any stretch, Chafin has decent split numbers verse lefties and historically doesn’t give up the long ball. Lefties have a .616 OPS against him lifetime, while righties have a .696 OPS.
