There were a lot of things that went into the Chicago Cubs winning the 2016 World Series. Being more talented, better coached, and luck all played their part. But the biggest reason might have been described to Bryant Gumble during an interview for HBO’s Real Sports.
When Gumble spoke with Cubs manager Joe Maddon, Joe revealed a little secret that has yet to be told. Until the Chicago Tribube’s David Haugh wrote about it.
In an interview with HBO Real Sports airing Tuesday, for instance, Maddon discussed crying at his father’s grave site in Hazleton, Pa., in December as he thanked him during a visit to the cemetery. Maddon also showed host Bryant Gumbel how he rubbed his lineup card before Games 5, 6 and 7 on pictures of Dick Howser, Chuck Tanner and Earl Weaver — the three other managers who overcame a 3-1 deficit to win a World Series,” Haugh penned.
So the Cubs were the most talented, best coached, and had the baseball gods all on their side.
If you want to catch HBO’s Real Sports, it is airing Tuesday February 21st at 9 PM Central.
