Dexter Fowler has been the catalyst for the Chicago Cubs over the last two seasons. Chicago is almost unbeatable when Dexter scores, and the “you go, we go” mentality that Joe Maddon put in Dexter’s head has helped this team make the playoffs in 2015, and win the World Series in 2016.
2016 will, unfortunately, be Dexter’s last season in Chicago, certainly having earned a multi-year deal for his play – Fowler will cash in during free agency. This is a good thing for him, Dexter fans, even if he were to land in St. Louis, as many suspect, this is a good thing for him and his family.
Because Dexter is a good dude, at the beginning of the season he bought Joe Maddon two bottles of Johnnie Walker Blue Label. One of those bottles had the team’seemed mantra etched in it, “Embrace the Target” while the other was left blank – until this week.
Fowler had the bottle inscribed with,
108 YEARS LATER
FLY THE W
2016
That wasn’t all…
Dexter, fittingly so, purchased 108 bottles to pass out to everyone in the Cubs organization that allowed for this to happen. Coaches, teammates, front office personnel, and other Cubs employees. His reasoning…
“Thanks to Joe, we ’embraced the target’ as a team from Day 1 and never lost sight of the goal,” Fowler said. “I decided to give everyone a special gift to thank them for their unwavering support and commitment to our success: engraved bottles of Johnnie Walker Blue Label. I figured 108 bottles was the right number and I’m honored to give them to my teammates, brothers, coaches, front office and everyone involved to mark this amazing achievement.”
This isn’t the first gift Dexter gave to his teammates. As the Cubs earned a spot in the NLCS, Dex fitted the Cubs with Jordan’s.
This is love, this is being a teammate. While Albert Almora Jr is set to replace Dexter in our scorecards, its going to be hard for him to take his place in our hearts.
Oh, and if you were curious… a custom engraved bottles of Johnnie Walker Blue Label costs $239 per bottle – without the W flag. You can do the math.
