Umm, this is, ah, well, disgusting. Apparently about a month ago, Travis Wood nearly lost his finger in a hunting accident. Now, I’m not entirely sure if he mentioned this to the Detroit Tigers, whom he signed a minor league deal with in January, and isn’t a lock to make the big league squad even with full usage of all his digits.
The details are about as murky as his chance to be on the Tigers opening day roster. Apparently, there was a weird snafu with the crossbow he was using which nearly caused the bow to take his right index finger off. If you recall, Wood is an avid hunter and full-blown red-neck (not using as an insult) and even showed up to the Cubs World Series parade in a camo-vest.
Regardless, a true warrior doesn’t let a finger get in the way of pitching in the bigs! So Travis Wood did whatever any other red-blooded, pure hick hearted American would do — HE ASKED THE DOC TO CUT IT OFF!”
Tigers non-roster invite Travis Wood has a pin in right index finger after a bow hunting accident. He said he asked doctor if chopping finger would get him back to pitching sooner. Fortunately, he’s left-handed. He’s throwing in camp but not catching yet.

Jason didn’t have the finger removed. Although he might be limited to just throwing over the next couple of days (he cannot get a glove over the pin in his finger, and it might have a bit of discomfort). He should get the pin out and be able to put a glove on. I would still imagine there will be some discomfort… I mean look at this!
This is Travis Wood’s finger. He got an x-ray this morning. Finding out later today if he can take the pin out. If so, he can ditch the splint and resume wearing the glove. pic.twitter.com/H9KKokqtwa
