Heyman: Cubs Pickup Former All Star Catcher

Since Willson Contreras went down with a grade-2 hamstring injury, the Chicago Cubs have been connected to Jonathan Lucroy. According to Jon Heyman, the Cubs signed the veteran catcher.

Lucroy is a shell of what he once was. He was waived by the LA Angels. Having completely cleared waivers, he was granted his unconditional release around 1:30 PM central time on Wednesday. About an hour later the Cubs signed him.

Lucroy has always been more known for his offensive production. Hitting .291/.353/.465 with 74 HR spanning 641 games between 2012-2016. This season he was hitting a lowly .242/.310/.371.

He has been an under appreciated backstop. He’s been very good at blocking balls in the dirt and pitch-framing. With Contreras injured, and out for at least a month, Lucroy will give the Cubs a quality backup veteran to catch behind Victor Caratini, who will grab the majority of opportunities.

The Cubs will pay Lucroy a prorated portion of the Major League minimum for the remainder of the season.
