On February 18th it marked the 18th anniversary of the legendary baseball announcer, Harry Carey’s passing. Today marks the 18th anniversary of the worldwide toast to Harry on his birthday.
According to the Facebook page, Toast to Harry Carey, anyone that wants to partake in a now worldwide toast, is welcome to do so at 6:30 PM on March 1st. While there will be a rather pompous party at Harry Carey’s restaurant (here is the Facebook invite for additional info) fans of Harry are welcome to toast to him from anywhere around the world. If you do, take a selfie and send it into the Facebook page as they plan on posting as many pictures as possible.
If you are lucky enough to make it out to Harry Carey’s Italian Steakhouse for the event, you’ll see a plethora of Chicago celebrities lead in the toasting festivities. Harry’s widow, Dutchie will be on hand, along with Chicago Bears legend Richard Dent, former White Sox Ron Kittle, Stanley Cup champ Daniel Carcillo, former Chicago Bull Bob Love, the Blackhawks Ice Girls, Ronnie Woo Woo, and the toast will be led by Cubs Hall of Fame second baseman, Ryne Sandberg. The event will be covered by WGN-AM 720 as the Roe Conn show will broadcast from 3 till 7 PM tonight.
Additionally the lemurs at Brookfield Zoo will join in on the toast, along with many other folks around Chicago. There will be a special, Happiest Happy Hour at Harry Carey’s, where Budweiser’s will go for as little as $1, and chances to win a trip to Spring Training.
Spread this around to any Cubs (or Sox) fan that loved listening to Harry Carey. Let’s help in making the 18th toast the biggest yet.
