The Chicago Bears have hired the 17th head coach in the team’s history, Matt Eberflus. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the now-former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator beat out Jim Caldwell and Dan Quinn for the job.

Eberflus’ defense in Indy was top 10 in points allowed three of his four seasons there. The Colts respected him so much that they kept him on board through a coaching shift of their own (Josh McDaniels to Frank Reich situation).
Some Chicago fans had hoped to bring in an offensive mind, someone that would get a ton out of young QB, Justin Fields. Another fear is, if Eberflus were to bring in a great offensive coordinator, they’re usually hot commodities when teams are interviewing for HC openings. So, the staff Eberflus plans on bringing in will have a lot of eyes on it.
The Bears, who already have a strong defensive core, will need a lot of help on offense AND will need the right people around Fields to foster his growth. While it seems he made an immediate impact on newly hired Ryan Poles, his most important relationship will be with Fields if this thing is going to work. As is, most appear to be “whelmed” by the hire, so putting a strong staff around him will be paramount.
