I was rather surprised when Carlos Beltran turned down the opportunity to interview for the Chicago Cubs open managerial seat. Now, another potential manager turns down the Cubs. This time, a former farmhand, Sam Fuld.

I wrote about Fuld’s chances of becoming the Cubs next skipper, and honestly, he would make sense. He’s recently out of the game, he has been working for the Philadelphia Phillies the last two seasons, and he’s been working very closely with the front office, the analytics teams, and the players.

“I think a lot of the times, the information can get overwhelming. It’s hard to sift through and pick ‘OK, what’s important for this game?” Rhys Hoskins said at the time. “To have Sam, he’s recently out of the game, kind of act as that bridge just makes it so much easier on us players.”

If there’s any solace in being turned down by Fuld, at least he also turned down the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets as well. Maybe he’s setting his sights on the Phillies top spot?

Or perhaps he’d rather be in the front office somewhere? The dude is smart, knows the game, and his Stanford degree would allow him to nestle in comfortably with other executive types. He already has a knack for disseminating data and communication. Honestly, a kid that has been pegged as a successful future manager will certainly have many opportunities ahead. The world is certainly his oyster.
