You have to understand that going back to play a game, regardless of the money, is a very difficult decision to make when your marriage is potentially on the line. I would never try to pry too much, and the story I wrote on the Zobrist’s marriage was done with a certain level of taste that I was rather proud of.

While Ben would decide to take an extended leave of absence to be there for his children, sort his personal life, and try to rebuild a marriage, the Cubs would eventually welcome him back on September first of this past year. But finishing off one month of a baseball season is a lot smaller of an ask than looking at a return to the game for another full season. This would mean he would be getting back in the gym now to get ready for the season. This is why, so far, Zobrist hasn’t made a decision on coming back for a 15th season.

A lot of fans only see the work someone puts in during the season. But there are many hours away from home before a player reports to spring training. Then they are gone from February through the end of September and sometimes even October. This is 3/4ths of a year.

At this point, if he is unsure, I’d put my money on him retiring. He has made enough money throughout his career and while I believe he can still give something back to baseball, his family is more important. I sincerely wish Ben and his entire family all the best. However, this offseason turns out.
