Boras: Cubs have ‘Great’ Plans for Kris Bryant
At the risk of becoming even more of a Kris Bryant blogsite, I do have some interesting comments from his agent, Scott Boras. During his annual address to the baseball nation, Boras went on and on about the new ownership in New York, and touched a bit on Bryant’s future with the Cubs.
Boras was classic Boras, suggesting it is nice to have an owner with “big apples” in the big apple (speaking about Steve Cohen buying the Mets), and even suggested that the Mets got a porterhouse when bringing Jared Porter in to become their GM. But the news that Cubs fans are most concerned about is what he said about Kris Bryant.
In his address, Boras suggests that the Cubs have “great plans” for the young slugger in 2021.
Now, does that mean they plan on trading him? Does that mean they plan on keeping him throughout the season? Does it mean they have plans of signing him to a long-term extension? Well… we don’t know exactly. I think it depends on what side of the Bryant coin you fall on. If you want the Cubs to keep him, then you are likely hearing that as they intend on keeping him. If you prefer the Cubs trade him, well, then it means that.
Personally, and this admittedly is swayed by my own personal bias, I think this suggests the Cubs intend on beginning the 2021 season with Bryant. As is, he is much more valuable to the Cubs on the 2021 roster than he is when trading him. As we have sort of heard, the market – while gaining interest – suggests he isn’t going to bring back a stockpile of prospects to the Cubs. But there are a couple of other interesting comments which lend a hand in me believing this to be the case.
Last week we heard Jed Hoyer suggest that trading Bryant isn’t a forgone conclusion. They are perfectly content having KB play third base for the club in the 2021 season, and with a hint of fans being present the financial woes might not be as limiting as once thought.
But then we also heard the Washington Nationals GM, Mike Rizzo, say that they have not had a serious conversation about Bryant for like two years.
“We haven’t had a serious conversation about Kris Bryant in probably two years,” Rizzo said. “He was not a big guy on our radar last year or this year. He’s a great player but at this point and time of where we’re at, and what we have in our farm system, and where we’re going, we think we can allocate our dollars and prospect capital in another way.”
We very well could see Bryant playing the hot corner for the Cubs in 2021, and that would be a good thing. In fact, in an offseason where the Cubs likely won’t add a major player, getting a healthy Kris Bryant in 2021 would be the biggest addition ANY team in baseball could add this offseason.
