Clueless Mike Francesa Rips Bears Defense

I can’t even… this guy is paid to sit in front of a giant caricature of himself, while people who think Mike Francesa knows what he’s talking about call to ask him questions. There are dumb takes every day among sports radio and sports media, this might be the dumbest.

Well Mike, here are the Chicago Bears defensive rankings.

Yards/Game – 4th (314.7)
Passing Yards/Game – 10th (235.3)
Rushing Yards/Game – 2nd (80.8)
Points – 2nd (211)
Sacks – 6th (34)
Interceptions – 1st (20)
Forced Fumbles – 20th (9)
Passing Attempts – 5th most (421)
Opposing QB Rating – 1st (78.3)

The Bears clearly are a much better defense against the run than they are against the pass. Even so, they are giving up the 10th least yards through the air while teams throw on them more than all but four other teams. If this team needs to get to the quarterback, which all defenses need to do to be effective, they’ve totaled 34 sacks (6th most) in their 11 games. But this isn’t all on the front seven’s ability to rush the QB, some of this is due to the Bears ability to cover receivers as well.

With the Bears more often than not in a shell defense, and not blitzing, they get pressure from four rushers and the ability for all four linebackers and their secondary being able to cover. The total defensive ability is why they are successful, and not due to them being one-dimensional.

Have absolutely ZERO clue what Mike Francesa is trying to say.

Even with teams attempt to throw more often than running, coming up short. Sure part of this is because teams aren’t successful running the ball, but again, this lends to the idea that the entire unit is sound, and not just a one-dimensional team.

Sure, they aren’t successful when they aren’t getting to the QB, but again, no one is. But this defense covers, is disciplined, and gets off the field when they need to.

The dude should have stayedoff-airr.
