Cubs Make Some Surprising Roster Cuts
The final weeks of spring training are about getting the regulars ready to play full 9 inning games and cutting the roster down to 25. With that, there are always difficult decisions that need to be made.
While this year’s decisions will not be concerning big named starters, or contributors from last year’s World Series roster, there are some names that are making an early exit to join the minor league camps.
The biggest of the names are Victor Caratini and Eloy Jimenez.
While it was an uphill battle for either of these two to make the team, there were some making arguments for them. Victor could have been a solid third catching option, but the team has shown considerable confidence in Kyle Schwarber’s ability to catch from time to time. However, if there was a trade of Miguel Montero (rumors have subsided) Victor would be a great addition to the catching corps.
Eloy has impressed both offensively and defensively. He’s another guy that can play multiple positions. With possible departures (Matt Szczur in particular) Eloy could have been a nice replacement.
While the cuts were expected, and the Cubs aren’t going to miss a beat, I would expect both of these players to make an appearance in the bugs this season.
