Is Alshon Jeffery Strike Two Against the Bears Front Office?
Alshon Jeffery hasn’t practiced since he strained his left calf in a practice on August 12th. Further damaging the Chicago Bears wide receiver corps is the injury to first round pick Kevin White, and now a nagging hamstring is limiting Marquess Wilson as well. While we reported earlier the supposed length Jeffery would be out of action, those reports are now inaccurate and Bears fans are beginning to lose faith in the Bears front office.
If you remember, the Bears originally listed White as a day-to-day type of injury which now we have learned that it is likely he could miss the entire season. While we originally passed on the news from Adam Schefter that Jeffery would likely miss a week of practice, we are now looking at the second week on inactivity from the veteran wideout and the messaging coming from Halas Hall is more than worrisome. With head coach John Fox stating that Jeffery is “day-to-day” he went on to explain.
When they clear him medically and we feel like it’s the smartest thing to do, he’ll be out there,” Fox said. “So I won’t be able to tell you (where he is) until we get closer to game day. … We’d prefer him out there and he’s doing everything he can to get out there. But it’s nobody’s fault.”
Sounds somewhat familiar doesn’t it? Here is what Fox said about White just a week before they broke the news that he will need to undergo surgery.
“I’m looking at day-to-day. I can’t predict. Sooner rather than later is what I hope,” John Fox said when asked about Kevin White’s return.
This might be a honest message from the Bears and Fox, but when you strung fans along with hope that your number one draft pick will be on the field soon and then we find out he is gone for the season, you have to understand how some have lost faith in the club’s messaging. What is further frustrating is, fans that have been in quarterback Jay Cutler’s corner over the years (I am one of them) have always defended him saying he has never gotten a fair shot. Whether his offensive line was bad, or the receivers, or the coaching, we have been a Rolodex of excuses for the gunslinger.
It seems that we will have another excuse this season, as Cutler learns a new offense – his fourth offense since joining the team in 2009 – and now a diminished receiving corps.
As the preseason moves along one thing is becoming very clear, we will not learn much from the 2015 version of the Chicago Bears, and the front office just might be the ones behind the curtain.
