TBT: The Ryne Sandberg Game (VIDEO)
On this date in 1984 a legend was born, well at least the rest of baseball learned who Ryne Sandberg was. June 23rd marks the anniversary of the great, Ryne Sandberg game. The game in which Ryno took the fellow Hall of Famer, Bruce Sutter deep twice to win a heated game agaimst the rival, St. Louis Cardinals.
Some say this single game went a long way in helping Sandberg win the 1984 MVP award. He owned a .314/.364/.520 slash line, powered 19 homers, and swiped 32 bases leading the Cubs to their first division title since winning the National League pennant in 1945. To others it only proved what we already knew, this kid was special.
Sandberg ended his 16-year MLB career with the Chicago Cubs, playing all but one season in Chicago. After retirement Sandberg decided to take a stab at managing, where he found a great deal of success within the Cubs minor league system. With the Cubs electing to hire Mike Quade as the fulltime manager after Lou Piniella left, Sandberg attempted to find greener pastures elsewhere.
After a stint with the Philadelphia Phillies, which saw an early end to his coaching career in 2015, Sandberg came back to the Cubs organization as a special ambassador and is highly active with the organization and special events.
