Yu Darvish Creates New Coronavirus Pitch

Yu Darvish spent the quarantine adding a new pitch. Now he’s even more filthy than he was before.

Many of us have taken on new projects during our pandemic quarantine. Some have painted the nursery, maybe you finished a basement, or even cleared something off the honey-do-list that’s been highlighted for a couple years. Yu Darvish, perhaps the filthiest pitcher in the NL, took time to develop a new pitch. That pitch, the Supreme.

As Darvish explains, this is a mix of a two-seamer and a splitter. As Darvish explains on Twitter, this pitch is thrown between 92-94 MPH, which is a tad slower than his four-seam, which comes in between 94-96 (but has dialed up to 98 at times).

The pitch has a strong darting action, down and in to a right handed batter. I can see this being devastating when tunneled with his four-seam and slider, and even his sinker, cutter, or change. This gives him multiple looks out of the same slot and in theory can be devastating to a hitter. Darvish also claims that this is easier on the arm than a two-seamer is and has more velocity than his splitter (89 according to Brooks Baseball).

I mean, this is what he did to arguably the best hitter in the NL, imagine yet another pitch that could be thrown alongside these?

Admittedly, Darvish doesn’t know how batters will react to it, but the thought of adding yet another nasty pitch to the repertoire is frightening. He is a living, breathing, video game style pitcher.
