Cubs Back Rizzo, Montero DFA’d

So by now you’ve heard the remarks by Miguel Montero. In postgame interviews he seemingly threw Jake Arrieta under the bus for not holding base-runners on.

“That’s the reason they were running left and right today, because they [Arrieta] were slow to the plate,” Montero said after the Cubs’ 6-1 loss. “Simple as that. It’s a shame it’s my fault because I didn’t throw anyone out.

“It really sucked, because the stolen bases go on me. But when you really look at it, the pitcher doesn’t give me any time, so yeah, ‘Miggy can’t throw anyone out,’ but my pitchers don’t hold anyone on.”

While some take those comments as horrible remarks, I held judgement as in sports, especially in baseball, you hold each other accountable. I do have issue with Miggy looking at it from a selfish perspective, but his comments weren’t untrue.

Well Anthony Rizzo fired back, and he absolutely destroyed Miguel Montero.

“He’s obviously frustrated. Whenever anyone steals seven bases, Miggy gets frustrated. It’s his second time barking in the media and not just going to his teammates. It’s something as a veteran like he is, you’d think he’d make smarter decisions about it.”

“I had no idea aobut it until I got back to the hotel and saw all this stuff. I got a couple text messages from a couple of my friends just kinda asking, ‘What the hell is this guy doing?’ Listen, we win as a team, we lose as a team. If you start pointing fingers, I think that just labels you as a selfish player. I disagree. We have another catcher that throws out everyone who steals and he has Jon Lester who doesn’t pick over. It’s no secret. I think going to the media with things like that, I don’t think it’s very professional.”

“Something like this, it’s out in the public now. Things that get handled with coffee or in the clubhouse are things that people never know about. Sometimes, they get out. But this was obviously all over ‘Sportscenter’ last night and whatnot and we’re talking about it today. We win as 25, we lose as 25. To call your teammates out via the press, I mean, what’s the point?”

The Chicago Cubs have now backed Arrieta and Rizzo. Miguel Montero has been designated for assignment and Cubs minor leaguer Victor Caratini is being called up.

Miguel Montero is no longer a Cub, well at least until after his 10-day window is up.

  1. He is right and he is wrong- Arrieta was terrible!! Can not air dirty laundry !! Baseball is a team event !! The team wins and the team loses !!

    1. don’t blame Arietta fully. Montero was 0-24 before last night throwing out runners.
