Cubs Might be Planning a Couple of Surprises for the Convention
The Chicago Cubs are frantically planning the 32nd annual Cubs Convention, and while we have recently gotten some information on who will be in attendance, but we haven’t heard too much about the schedule of events. While this information typically comes out closer to the event, or even the Friday of, there does appear to be a cloud of secrecy around this year’s events.
This leave one to wonder why there has been some much secrecy, especially when there is this much excitement surrounding this year’s convention. While it could be business as usual, there could be an even bigger reason to this – they plan on making some huge announcements.
David Ross
If you noticed, David Ross is a planned guest at this year’s event. While this in itself isn’t a huge signal that there is an announcement, I am suspecting that there is an announcement that he is indeed joining the Cubs front office as some sort of advisor or spring training coach. If you recall, David was offered a position within the Cubs organization, to some extent, and he wanted to take some time to talk things over with his family. Part of that was waiting for his kids to get off of school so the entire family could discuss the time commitments.
Well school was out and is now back in, and with him expected to be at the convention I expect that the Cubs and David announce he is joining the team in some capacity.
If you think that this is a bit corny, or there would be some sort of announcement outside of the convention – they announced Ryne Sandberg joining the Cubs as an ambassador at the beginning of last year’s convention. While I have yet to have this information confirmed, I would put the odds of David being announced as a coach or ambassador in the 85% range.
Tyson Ross
This is a little more farfetched. In today’s age of sports information and social media, and the insane pressures there are on baseball insiders to break news, it is highly unlikely that Tyson would have signed without anyone knowing. While there could have been an under the table type of arrangement which he agreed but was waiting till the convention, I would doubt this were the case.
I mean, I could see a Dexter Fowler type of thing, where as the executives are on a panel Tyson comes strolling out from behind the curtain, or even stands up to ask a question and that is how it is announced.
Still this is highly unlikely, if he was going to be with the team the news would have been released somewhere or somehow. I’d peg this as less than 5% probability to happen.
Mr and Mrs Bryant
Another shot in the dark, but with Kris Bryant and his lovely wife Jessica Delp having only been married for a week this Saturday, I am guessing that the team does something special for the newlyweds.
I would guess that there is some sort of gift given from the organization to the newly wedded couple, and I imagine they upgrade the couple to the honeymoon suite in the Sheraton.
I would put this somewhere in the 80% range of possibly happening. I think this is probable, and would allow the fans to have that moment to congratulate the couple, which could help reduce the amount of fans starting off questions with a congratulations to the newlyweds.
Rings
This would be awesome! While I think they would wait till the home opener, Monday April 10th, to hand out championship rings, this is still a solid possibility to happen from January 13th through January 15th.
Again, I would imagine that they would wait till the home opener, but this will certainly reward the fans that were able to secure convention tickets. This is also different than any other convention the Cubs have ever hosted before – a convention for a championship team.
I actually have talked myself into thinking that this could indeed happen. Even though I think this is a possibility, I would put this in the 50% range of possibly happening.
Special Guest???
This is a highly unlikely thing, but it would be pretty awesome, at least for those fans that don’t hold grudges.
What if Dexter Fowler were to show up on Friday during the introductions? Now he will certainly not be allowed by the St. Louis Cardinals to do so, and even if they signed off on it he would kill his Cardinal career before it began if he did go. But it would be fun to see regardless…
I say 0%, but I thought it would be funny/cool if it did indeed happen. I mean he surprised the Cubs before when he already agreed to play elsewhere.
