Dumb Cardinals Fan Attempts Trolling Astros, Forgets One Huge Issue

Imagine being a St. Louis Cardinals fan and thinking they can give the Houston Astros a hard time for an elaborate technology cheating scheme… Well, that’s just what one Cardinals fan tried to do when he visited Astros camp in Juniper, Florida.

I won’t give out this dude’s name, and I blurred his face, but here are a couple of pictures of him watching Astros batting practice.

Now, I give him a bit of credit. He did what I bet a lot of people want to do, and probably have already done. There is no excusing the lengths that the Astros went to, in an attempt to cheat the game. It seems that nearly everyone in the game can claim the moral high ground on this one… well… except for the Cardinals…

The St. Louis Cardinals hacking scandal—in which then-scouting director Chris Correa used a former colleague’s password to access the Houston Astros’ player database over 50 times in 16 months—is unprecedented in baseball history.

Yeah, perhaps the second biggest cheating scandal in the game came from the hands of the Cardinals when they hacked into the Astros database.

Now, I do want to provide some context as I can already hear people complaining. I don’t know if we truly understand what Chirs Correa did when he gained access to the Astros database and we don’t know how that information helped the Cardinals. We do know that Correa stole confidential information including scouting reports and data on players and prospects. We also know that the crime was severe enough that Correa was sentenced to 46 months in prison on 12 counts of corporate espionage.

It is a strange case as most scandals in baseball were on-field scandals. Performance Enhancing Drugs, while there is belief many front offices knew what was happening, it was an on-field issue. Betting on baseball became an on-field issue due to the potential to fix and rig outcomes. Then there, of course, are the regular sign-stealers. The, it is against the unwritten rules of the game but still in that grey “gamesmanship” area of the game.

This was an unprecedented case and it was unclear what kind of discipline MLB would hand down. It came down hard on the Cardinals and understandably so. This isn’t a matter of gamesmanship. Correa wasn’t stealing signs on the field. This is the executive of one private company hacking into another’s information to gain an advantage. It’s espionage.

But in all seriousness, there isn’t a team in baseball that could claim the moral high ground. While there weren’t other teams out there that cheated to the extent of the Astros, there have been many scandals throughout the game. Plus, if you think that there aren’t people pushing limits of legal and not-legal in today’s game – you probably haven’t been a baseball fan for very long.

Correa was wrong and deserved his prison time. His reason for doing this according to him was that he thought Luhnow had taken proprietary info from the Cardinals. After watching this mess and the win at All cost by Luhnow I’m not Sure that Correa was totally wrong. He chose the wrong way to do it. My problem isn’t with Correa’s prison time. Why didn’t the Astros front office and players get jail time?
