Insider: Several Teams Are Asking for Kyle Schwarber
There are several rumors that seemingly never go away. The Chicago Cubs are interested in Chris Archer. The Cubs and Mets will work a deal out for one of their pitchers. The Cubs can spend whatever they want to because of TV money… Another rumor that seems to continuously come up, but the Cubs have stood pat on is trading Kyle Schwarber.
It seems that since the 2016 championship, Cubs fans, media, and anyone else that hasn’t listened to a single word Theo Epstein has uttered, have suggested that the Cubs will trade Schwarber to an AL team, so he can DH and the Cubs would receive pitching. Regardless of how many times this is brought up, the Cubs deny it. But yet the rumors persist.
It makes some sense, this was a guy that didn’t really have a position, and carrying a bat only, when there were other options that could slug, didn’t seem like a smart use of a roster spot. But again, the Cubs have declined the idea, over and over, and continued to tell the world why they value him in the clubhouse.
Schwarber began to show why backing him was the right move. In 2018, he turned himself into a nice defensive left fielder, and even improved his bat from the 2017 season. With yet another offseason to work on his craft, who knows what he can become?
But, there it was once again. Rumors that the Cubs could potentially move Schwarber, which would open up future dollars, which could allow for the team to afford a dip in the deep end of the free agent pool in 2019. But, yet again, it looks like the Cubs are telling interested suitors no.

Now, I don’t put a ton of trust in Bob Nightengale. It seems like if there were an insider batting average on how often they get stories right, he’s hitting under .100. But, when it comes to Schwarber there have just never been any rumors of merit that have suggested that the Cubs would ever trade him. We’ve stated it time and time again here at Chicago Style Sports, as long as Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer are running the show in Chicago, Kyle Schwarber will be on their roster.
This isn’t a 2016 World Series, playing the hero sort of thing. Both Theo and Jed have told the world on many occasions how much Schwarber means to this club. Being a guy that puts in the work, is the first guy there and last one to leave, the studying, the impact he has on others in the clubhouse – Schwarber is here to stay. And with Nightengale’s latest, the rest of baseball should get used to Kyle remaining a Cub for a long, long time.
