Kyle Schwarber Asked to Play Third Base
I’m just getting back from the 31st annual Cubs Convention, and if you haven’t been to one before it is a must for Cubs fans. Not only are there opportunities to take pictures and get autographs with your favorite Cubs, get great Cubs merchandise, but you also get to hear phenomenal stories. One of those stories was how Kyle Schwarber was asked to play third base.
During the Rockstar Rookies panel, presented by Wintrust Bank, Schwarber revealed how manager Joe Maddon asked him to play third base during a playoff game.
“Joe asked, have you ever played third base before?” Kyle replied, “No, but I can block it for you.”
As the audience laughed in amusement, others on the panel (included Addison Russell, Javy Baez, and Kris Bryant) mentioned other positions they were asked to play. Of course Addison Russell played short stop, he mentioned he played five games at second base before getting called up. Baez also mentioned his versatility in being moved all over the diamond and being asked to play outfield this offseason. Then Bryant talked about playing the outfield, and how it actually helped him focus more by changing up his routine.
Bryant also joked.
“I’ll play wherever they need me, I think I’ll be at third (base), but I’ll do anything even back up Anthony at first.”
It was great to see these young kids talk so genuinely, and is part of the reason Cubs fans should make it out to a Cubs Convention at some point. Additionally it’s just a great chance to hear and share in an annual Cubdom love-fest with 40,000 of your closest friends.
I think the last one I went to was the seventh one. Had a great time, but I’ve never been able to make it back to one since, for various reasons (one of them being my declining health the last several years, unfortunately). But if I could, I’d go to another one in a heartbeat!! GO, CUBBIES!!!!
It’s been a long time coming, guys don’t let me down i’m 73yrs old i don’t have too many left so lets do it this year. Not to take anything away from past Cubs (there were some great ones) but this is the BEST collection of players i have ever seen. I am glad Ryno is back where he belongs i just wish Ernie and Ronnie Santo were here to see these guys. Go Cubs.
