Source: Bears Have Offered Bridgewater Around 3 yrs $60 Million
According to an NFL source close to WSCR AM-670 The Score’s Dan McNeil, the Chicago Bears have offered Teddy Bridgewater at least what the Carolina Panthers offered him. There was fear however, from Bridgewater that with the presence of Mitch Trubisky, there would have been competition for the starting job.
Whether Bears fans like it or not, or even understand it, the organization will give Trubisky every opportunity to continue to play and compete for the starting job. This is what happens when a team invests as much as they have in a QB – especially one drafted as high as Trubisky was. The worst thing that could have happened for the Bears was, they spend $60 million chasing yet another QB, Bridgewater doesn’t pan out, and Trubisky finds success in another city.
While signing a QB to essentially $20 million a season suggests that they would hand the reins over to him (don’t suggest that to Mike Glennon), the presence of Mitch alone is enough to cause concern for any QB wishing for a job here.
Personally, I don’t think Teddy was the answer. I don’t know if Mitch is the answer, and after three seasons that’s a giant issue.
I think I would be much more inclined to make a run at someone like Tom Brady for a year, hoping that some of his football IQ and how he reads a defense rubs off on Mitch. This would also play into the Bears’ current roster, which is built to win now.
The dangerous thing is you are then likely to pick up his fifth-year option without really understanding what he is. Is he closer to the 2018 QB that showed he could be good in this league? Or is he the 2019 QB that regressed and you wouldn’t want around a football field. Then you dip back into the NFL free agent pool after the 2021 season which could have some rather intriguing names.
