If You’re Selling Trubisky, I’m Buying

I saw a lot of fans ready to give up on Chicago Bears quarterback, Mitch Trubisky. He was erratic, had happy feet, missed several wide open receivers, and was picked off twice in the Bears win. It doesn’t help when fans can see Pat Mahomes and Deshaun Watson both succeeding, while Mitch is putzing along.

It also hurts because it feels like the Bears defense is championship ready right now.

So there were many posts on all forms of social media wanting to go to Chase Daniel, proclaiming Mitch is the fourth (or worse) Best QB from last year’s draft, and going as far as boycotting the Bears until they figure out the quarterback position.

Here’s the thing… if you’re comparing Mitch to Watson and Mahomes, right now – you’re wrong.

Mitch isn’t on the same level as those guys, yet. These guys were 1000% ready for the leap from college to the pros, Mitchell is still getting his feet under him. He’s still learning the position. He’s really still a rookie QB.

These guys are not comparable yet. Deshaun had a championship pedigree coming to the NFL. Mahomes sat his first year behind Alex Smith, with a coach that is known to groom quarterbacks.

Trubisky has started one college season and sat behind Mike Glennon while getting coached up by John Fox. Not exactly shining examples of immediate success in the NFL. And as much as you want to say Mitch is bad, multiple NFL talent evaluators disagree with you, including those in Houston and Kansas City.

It is going to take a while for Mitch to become the guy that you can put the game on his shoulders and expect to win. Right now, we all have to wait. That sucks, I know it does. Bears fans don’t have the tolerance nor the patience for rebuild projects or project quarterbacks. Not when we see guys like Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre before him. But remember, even in Green Bay, Rodgers sat behind Favre for four seasons before they turned the reins over to him, and he was a well established NCAA quarterback.

We just cannot accurately judge Mitch on his first 14 NFL games. I don’t care how many TD’s Mahomes throws, how electric Watson looks, or how many interceptions Trubisky tosses. This is a growth, learning, and development stage for Mitch and the Bears – regardless of how far along their defense is.

So let’s give the Bears franchise QB some time to learn the QB position. Let’s give him time to learn how to play that position in the NFL. Let’s be happy someone like Matt Nagy is teaching him the ropes. This kid will be good, and if you’re selling Mitchell Trubisky stock – I’m buying – and so are the Bears.
